Common Teen Mental Health Challenges

The teen years are full of change—physically, socially, and emotionally. Social media, academic pressure, and the search for independence can all impact teen mental health. Around one-third of teens experience anxiety disorders, and depression rates also increase during adolescence (Merikangas et al., 2010). Additionally, social media use is linked to feelings of loneliness and anxiety, adding another layer of challenge (Twenge et al., 2019).

Self-Care Tips for Teens to Improve Mental Well-Being

1. Encourage Supportive Friendships

Teens benefit from relationships that help them feel seen and supported. Studies show that positive friendships and family support are linked to reduced anxiety and depression (Rueger et al., 2016). Healthy friendships also encourage authenticity and help teens feel safe to be themselves.

2. Set Boundaries with Social Media

Social media is a double-edged sword; it connects people but can also create stress. Encourage teens to set healthy boundaries, such as phone-free family meals or a “digital detox” day. Research shows that too much screen time can increase feelings of loneliness, so mindful use can make a difference (Orben & Przybylski, 2019).

3. Encourage Physical Activity as a Mood Booster

Movement is a powerful mood booster for teens. Physical activity, even in the form of a quick walk or a dance class, has been shown to reduce stress and improve overall mental health (Bailey et al., 2018). Exercise can be a fun way for teens to express themselves and feel empowered.

4. Suggest Journaling as a Way to Express Emotions

For teens who struggle to communicate their feelings, journaling can be a safe, non-judgmental outlet. Research shows that expressive writing helps reduce stress and process thoughts (Pennebaker & Smyth, 2016). Journaling gives teens a personal, empowering space to be honest with themselves.

5. Build Resilience Through Problem-Solving

Teens need opportunities to solve problems on their own to build resilience. Simple decisions—whether tackling a new project or managing schoolwork—allow them to feel more independent and capable, reducing stress and increasing confidence (Masten, 2014). Building resilience through problem-solving encourages authenticity and helps them find their own path.
